Lagos state which is located in the Yoruba-speaking southwestern part of Nigeria is well-known as the richest, most educated, and most populated city in Nigeria.

This fact has led to one of the largest concentrations of higher institutions in the state to accommodate all its residents.

The state’s motto “center of excellence” celebrates the large availability of educational facilities the state has with the number of universities established.

These Universities may be owned and managed by the federal government, the state government, or by private companies, individuals, or institutions like a church.

The universities listed below are located in Lagos state and have all been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

They are;

Universities in Lagos State

1. National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

The National Open University of Nigeria is a federal government-owned and managed higher institution. It is the first of its kind in western Africa as its curriculum and method of learning centers on open and distance learning encouraging people from all works of life and schedules accessible education that is also affordable.

First established in 1983, the school was soon shut down but was revived in 2001 and has been functional ever since. The headquarters is situated in Abuja but the Lagos branch is located in Victoria Island, Eti-Osa, and is one of 63 other NOUN centers scattered all over Nigeria, which caters to floods of students every year.

2. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos located in Yaba and Surulere is a federal government-owned and managed institution. The university has a reputation for being one of the top-ranking federal higher institutions in Nigeria.

Established in 1962, UNILAG is one of the oldest universities in Nigeria with three campuses (two in Yaba and one in Surulere). The university has received many academic accolades since its founding and is affordable to attend.

The University of Lagos has twelve faculties ranging from health sciences to business to liberal arts and everything in between. The school awards bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and Doctorate degrees in all the major fields.

3. Lagos State University (LASU)

The Lagos State University which is a state-owned and managed university was established in 1983 and has three campuses in the state located in Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe.

The administrative and main campus is at Ojo and houses the majority of the school’s faculties. The Lagos State University offers all the major courses such as medicine, law, engineering, economics etcetera.

4. Augustine University (AUI), Ilara-Epe

Augustine University is a private (Catholic Church) owned and managed institution located in Ilara-Epe. The school is run on the values and traditions of the Catholic Church with an aim to uphold cultural, religious, and academic excellence.

The university which was established in 2008 and accredited in 2015, Augustine University offers bachelor’s degrees and postgraduate degrees. The tuition ranges from N250,000 to N300,000 yearly.

5. Caleb University, Ikorodu

Caleb University located in Ikorodu is a privately owned and managed university and operates on faith-based values. The University is also noted as one of the most affordable private institutions in the country making it a good choice for lower-income households.

Established and accredited in 2007, Caleb University has fast-paced into becoming one of the top private universities in Nigeria. Caleb University has established a long history of excellence in academia, research, and community.

6. Pan-Atlantic University, Lekki

Pan-Atlantic University is a privately owned and managed University. It is also a non-profit institution which has it tagged as one of the cheaper options among private institutions in Lagos.

The University has two campuses in ibeju-lekki and Ajah and offers four courses of study in the art department.

7. Anchor University, Ayob

Anchor University is a privately (Deeper Christian Life Ministry) owned and managed institution. Established in 2014, the anchor university operates based on the deeper Christian life ministry values which believe in high morality and good, affordable education for all.

Consisting of three faculties, natural science, management, and social science and humanities, the tuition costs approximately N500,000 to N600,000 yearly.

8. James Hope University, Lekki

James Hope University is a privately (Mr. Jim Ovia, founder of zenith bank) owned and managed institution. The University offers postgraduate courses only with the minimum at the master’s level.

Dedicated to providing world-class education and breaking down academic barriers, James Hope University is establishing a world-class business school.

9. Christopher University, Mowe

Christopher University is a privately owned and managed institution. Established and Accredited in 2015, the University is one of the newly opened schools in Lagos.

The University aims to train specialized courses so as to produce experts in certain fields. The tuition ranges from N450,000 to N500,000 yearly.

10. Southwestern University

South Western University is a privately owned and managed institution with a reputation of being a top-ranking school.

Offering a large range of courses in business, finance, natural sciences, and many others, there is a large variety for students to choose from. The tuition can range from N180,000 to N200,000 yearly.

11. Eko University of Medical and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED), Ijanikin

Eko University of Medical and Health Science is a privately owned and managed institution which focuses on medical and health sciences. The university is a medical, specialized, non-sectarian, and co-educational institution.

Offering medical and health courses such as medicine and surgery, nursing science, dentistry, dental surgery, and many others. The university is one of a kind with its focus on just medical and health sciences courses.

The universities listed above are located in Lagos and are accredited by the national universities commission (NUC) and were established in order to cater to the large population of individuals seeking higher education within the state.

Federal-owned and managed universities tend to be more affordable and offer more variety of courses for students followed by state universities which usually cost more than federal universities but can still be affordable to middle-class citizens.

Private universities are known for their expensive tuition and limited courses but they are often specialized and more student-focused.
